Rock the Casbah

Need some hair of the dog for your Austin Fashion Week hangover? Monday, August 29th, North Loop (the black sheep of Austin shopping districts) is hosting Rock the Casbah, an exotic sampling of food, fashion, and music at Phara’s Mediterranean Restaurant and Casbah.

Starting at 8pm, Rock the Casbah will include a fashion show that previews new looks from your favorite quirky North Loop boutiques: Blackbird Clothes and Curios, Blue Velvet, Ermine Vintage, Forbidden Fruit, Green House, and Splendor.

KUT darling Laurie Gallardo will be hosting while North Loop’s resident vinyl junkies, Breakaway Records, will be providing music that promises to literally rock the casbah.

Cinco Vodka will be offering samples of casbah cosmos and photographer Katie Cowden will be snapping photos in a hookah lounge photo booth. Phara’s (byob) will be serving up complimentary appetizers while belly-dancers shimmy through the gorgeous back patio.

...and all of this for FREE!

Want to make the most use out of your clothing? Using different accessories can make one staple piece look completely different and appropriate for almost any occasion! Check out some examples we pulled together here using our $24

You'll be ready for the theater, that summer wedding, or just some snazzy cocktails by decorating yourself with a sparkly necklace and adorable clutch. We used our "Breastplate of Bling" ($44 w/matching earrings) and our "Lace Ruffle Clutch" ($32 with two detachable chains of different lengths).

Heading out to the lake or running errands in the nice 101 degree weather? Throw on some shades ($14), a simple necklace like our "Black Heart choker" ($12), and a straw fedora (JuJu Hats $14). All your missing is an ice cold Lonestar, which we unfortunately don't sell here...

If its an after work happy hour or catching your favorite band somewhere downtown, adding a bit of edge to your look can be great for a fun night. This black slitted belt is just the thing ($12). Add a Gothic touch using a necklace like our "Double Medallion" one ($25). And what better way to carry around all of your necessities than a big black leather bag? This "D-Ring" purse ($51), for example, is big enough to hold your own personal bottle of wine (if that's how you roll), goes with almost anything, and has just the right amount of metal adornment to make it unique.

We have been open for two months now and want to tell you a little bit more about ourselves...so if you're the curious type, pull up a chair and let's chat!

The Store

Blackbird Clothes and Curios brings you interesting Men's and Women's clothes from a fashionably twisted point of view that, at the same time, reflect that special "only in Austin" feel of the North Loop area. We love it here!

At our store, you will find a curios collection that showcases art, ephemera, trinkets, and found objects that have pinches of punk, cabaret, steampunk, gothic romance, or are just downright weird.

Our clothes are as close to "one-of-a-kind" at an "artist/student/not yet discovered my royal lineage" price as is possible for us to bring you. We work with designers and manufacturers that allow us to order in very small amounts which ensures our customers a personal statement with their choices. You don't have to worry about seeing your same outfit or piece of jewelry walking down the street or at the same show.

The Specialist: Juliana Azar

Juliana is a fashion designer, artist, and instructor in the Fashion/Retail Management program at the Art Institute of Austin. With the exception of a brief stint in NYC to "find herself," Juliana is a born and bred Austin native who grew up in the NOLO hood! She has degrees in Fine Arts from both UT and ACC and was awarded a full scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles to study fashion design. She can answer any question you may have about textiles or what color, fit, and silhouette is right for you.

The Fun Maker: Stacey Breakall

Stacey is a wildly disciplined student in the art of creating fun scenarios. Some of her creations include Flea Market Film Festival, Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, and the Texas Burlesque Festival. For Blackbird, she brings to the table a keen knack for getting things done and a love of seedy glamour and objects of the odd. She has curated a delicious selection of gifts and trinkets, from the strangely cute to the downright curious and wants to share them with you.

Three Little Birds Upon My Doorstep.

Monday evening, Juliana and I came up to the store to grab stuff for our photo shoot. Much to our surprise, there was a mysterious totem hanging on the door: a beautiful wind chime with three little blackbirds perched at the top. We have had several compliments on it already and are pleased to have it join the small list of other totems that have brought us luck and happiness:

1. A found blackbird feather that we stapled to the inside of the dressing room while it was being built.
2. A blackbird perched atop a heart that was made by my wonderful husband, Mike.
3. And last but not least, St. Genevieve, patron saint of cheap wine.
